What is Books on Demand?

BOD is a direct ordering facility for teachers. You can buy any titles published by the Penguin Group at a 20% discount. This includes books from Puffin, Penguin, Dorling Kindersley, Ladybird and Frederick Warne.

How does it work?

BOD has a range of booklists that we mail to teachers interested in BOD; these are also available on request. Your books will be delivered, free of charge, directly to schools. There’s no minimum order level and you receive a 20% discount on all orders.

 

Why join BOD?

It’s an excellent way for busy teachers to buy an appropriate and wide range of books to meet the needs of the literacy curriculum. The titles are selected by educational experts which means that you don’t need to pore over them to assess their suitability, which saves valuable time. And you get a 20% discount on all titles.

There’s a wide range of titles as well as styles and genres chosen from books published by Puffin, Penguin, Dorling Kindersley, Ladybird and Frederick Warne.

How do I register online?

Teachers across the UK are entitled to join BOD and to order online. If you are an existing BOD member have your account number handy – when you click on Register you will be prompted to enter this number. (N.B. Books on Demand was formerly Penguin Schools Direct. Your exisitng Penguin Schools Direct account number is still valid so please ensure you use this when registering). Fill in your details in the secure registration section and then proceed to place your order.

If you are a new member wanting to order online you just need your email address and postcode. Go to Register and press Continue, when prompted for your account number. You can then fill in your details and place an order. Your account number will then be sent to you with your first order.

This registration process is totally secure. Your details can only be accessed via a login and password section, set up by you during registration.

If I experience difficulties with the site how can I check that my computer is compatible with www.booksondemandonline.co.uk?

What settings should be in place before I can use www.booksondemandonline.co.uk?

JavaScript must be enabled and Cookies must be allowed. (JavaScript is a code that’s added to standard web pages to create interactive documents. Cookies are alphanumeric identifiers that we transfer to your web browser. They enable us to recognise your web browser and enable you to login to this web site. If you disable cookies in your browser you will not be able to login.)

Usually these settings are automatically enabled on your computer but for various reasons they may have been altered or disabled.

To ensure the correct settings are enabled please follow these instructions – making sure you use the correct instructions for your version of Internet Explorer or Netscape Communicator where necessary.

Please note:

  • Internet Explorer allows you to set different security settings for different areas i.e. Internet, Intranet etc. Please ensure you choose Internet when prompted to specify the zone.

To enable JavaScript and allow Cookies if you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 and above:

  1. Click on View if you are using 4.x or Tools if you are using 5.x and above.
  2. Choose Internet Options.
  3. Click on the Security tab, next to the General tab.
  4. Select Internet Zone from the drop down list.
  5. You now need to select a security level, which is usually Medium. You can do this in three different ways:

    a) On Internet Explorer 4 you can select this via the Security tab and on Internet Explorer 5, and above, you need to click the Privacy tab to specify a security level. If you are using Internet Explorer 6 you may need to override the advanced privacy settings if they are in force – click on Advanced, check First-party Cookies: Accept and Always allow session cookies.

    OR

b) You can adjust the security settings manually by using the Custom tab to adjust settings. If you do use this method please ensure you click on Scripting: Enable. If you are using Internet Explorer 5 you need to also click on Cookies: Enable at this point too.

c) Reset settings to the correct default via the Advanced tab. If you click Restore Defaults this will ensure compatibility with www.booksondemandonline.co.uk

N.B.

Medium security offers a safe level of security without compromising functionality. High security can potentially limit your use of some pages that don’t present a security risk. PBC contains JavaScript but it is safe to use – it does not change local computer settings or do anything that is considered a security risk. To enable JavaScript and allow Cookies if you are using Netscape Navigator 6:

  1. Click on Edit in the toolbar menu and then select Preferences.
